Round whole numbers using place value
Round a whole number to a requested place.

A LITTLE PRACTICE. A NEW DISCOVERY.
Place value tells you how much each digit contributes to a number. Rounding uses that structure to select a nearby benchmark. The requested place determines which two benchmarks to compare and how precise the reported number will be.
Identify the requested rounding place before looking at the next digit. Locate the exact number between consecutive multiples of ten, one hundred, or one thousand. Then choose the nearer benchmark.
Write 3,428 on a number line between 3,400 and 3,500. Compare the distances to both endpoints. Repeat with thousand benchmarks and discuss why a different rounding place gives a different answer.
Look immediately to the right of the requested rounding place. Reading only the last digit can give the wrong benchmark.
