GRADE 4 · Division

Division with remainders

Find a whole-number quotient and explain the leftover amount.

Learn the idea

A remainder is the amount left after making as many complete equal groups as possible. It must be smaller than the divisor, because otherwise another complete group could be made.

  1. Find the largest multiple of the divisor that does not exceed the total.
  2. Subtract that multiple to find the remainder.
  3. Check: divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend.

LET’S WORK IT OUT

Worked example

Divide 29 stickers among groups of 4.

29 ÷ 4 = 7 remainder 1

Seven groups use 28 stickers. One sticker remains. Check: 4 × 7 + 1 = 29.

A mistake to watch for

A remainder of four when dividing by four would make one more complete group.

Try three practice questions

Enter your answer, then check the explanation. You can also open each explanation to study it. These three questions check understanding; they are not a mastery score.

Question 1

For 23 ÷ 5, enter only the remainder.

Answer and explanation

3 — Four groups use 20; 23 − 20 = 3.

Question 2

For 34 ÷ 6, enter only the whole-number quotient.

Answer and explanation

5 — Five groups use 30, with four left over.

Question 3

For 41 ÷ 8, enter only the remainder.

Answer and explanation

1 — Five groups use 40, leaving one.

For parents and teachers

Discuss what a leftover means: sharing a snack differs from buying enough boxes.

Ask your learner to explain the method before moving on. This lesson covers one focused skill and is not a complete curriculum assessment.
