Learn the idea
Division can tell you how many equal groups fit into a total, or how many items belong in each group. A multiplication fact helps you check the answer.
- Identify the total and the group size or group count.
- Ask which factor completes the related multiplication.
- Check that the quotient multiplied by the divisor gives the total.
LET’S WORK IT OUT
Worked example
Share 24 counters equally among 6 students. How many does each student receive?
24 ÷ 6 = 4 counters
Six groups of four make 24. Each student receives four counters.
A mistake to watch for
Keep track of whether the answer describes the number of groups or the size of each group.
