Learn the idea
Equivalent fractions name the same quantity using different equal parts. Compare models with the same whole before comparing the shaded amounts.
- Start with equal-sized wholes.
- Split each part into the same number of smaller parts.
- Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.
LET’S WORK IT OUT
Worked example
Rename 1/2 using fourths.
1/2 = 2/4
Splitting each half into two equal parts makes four parts in the whole. The shaded half now covers two of them.
A mistake to watch for
Changing only the denominator changes the size of the fraction. Rename both numbers together.

Try three practice questions
Enter your answer, then check the explanation. You can also open each explanation to study it. These three questions check understanding; they are not a mastery score.
Question 1
Complete 1/2 = ?/6. Enter the missing numerator.
Answer and explanation
3 — Multiply numerator and denominator by three: 1/2 = 3/6.
Question 2
Complete 2/3 = ?/6. Enter the missing numerator.
Answer and explanation
4 — Multiply both numbers by two: 2/3 = 4/6.
Question 3
Complete 3/4 = ?/8. Enter the missing numerator.
Answer and explanation
6 — Multiply both numbers by two: 3/4 = 6/8.
For parents and teachers
Fold two equal paper strips into halves and fourths, then compare the same shaded amount.
Ask your learner to explain the method before moving on. This lesson covers one focused skill and is not a complete curriculum assessment.
